New technology charges remote devices

Charges Remote Devices
Random News - The US Startup uBeam develops a technology that remotely can load mobile devices using ultrasonic vibrations.

A first prototype was presented on Wednesday, reports the New York Times.

The technology converts electricity into sound, and then sends that sound as ultrasonic vibration through the air. A receiver in, for example, a cellular phone, turns those vibrations back into electricity.

That way, it should be possible to walk through a room with a smartphone or tablet while charging the apple at the same time. "It's a wifi-like experience," said 25-year-old founder Meredith Perry. Existing wireless charging technologies still require that the device connects to a wireless charger or, in other cases, is close to a charger.

In addition, the 5 mm thicker is very thin and could possibly be attached to walls. "If wireless energy is everywhere, batteries may decrease in size because the batteries are always charging," said Perry. "You'll never need a cable, or international adapters."

The same technology can also be used to send sensitive information by the charging stations. This makes uBeam very suitable for 'the internet of things'; the rise of smart (household) devices, according to Perry.

The technology also has its limitations. Thus, no ultrasonic vibrations can be transmitted through walls, which means that a combination of a Wi-Fi router with the new charging technology is not possible.

The first uBeam is expected to be in the consumer market in two years. Initially, it focuses on two versions: one for small spaces such as offices and living rooms, one for larger spaces such as stadiums and airports.
