Windows 8.1 Update 1 Shut down

This new menu for shutting down and restarting the Metro Start menu has several functions as well as the menu under Win + i.

- Press Down - Windows will shut down in hybrid mode (fast start).
- Pressed Shift (up arrow) and Shut Down - Windows will shut down completely
- Restart - Windows restarts the operating system normally.
- Press the Shift key (up arrow) and restart - Windows goes to the Advanced Startup Options

If this new button in the Metro Start menu does not like it can also hide it.
- See: Button Shut down on the Start menu Windows 8.1 Update 1
- If you do not see the new start button:
- Button for shutdown missing in MetroStart

Button for shutdown is not displayed in MetroStart

Again, there is a solution.

- Win + R Press regedit to enter and start
- Go to path HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \

CurrentVersion \ ImmersiveShell \

- In the right window, create a new DWORD value (32 bit) with the name: DWORD value Launcher_ShowPowerButtonOnStartScreen
- If it does not go: Permissions in the registry
- Double-click this new value and set it to 1. This displays the power button in the MetroStart.

The value 0 then turns it off again.

Slide to shutdown

A new shutdown feature is in Windows 8.1 Slide to shutdown
- The * .exe is located at:
- C: \ Windows \ System32 \ SlideToShutDown.exe

You can also create a shortcut.

If you have triggered the SlideToShutDown.exe, you can:
- A click / touch in the upper area, lets Windows 8.1 shut down.
- A click / touch in the lower area, breaks down the shutdown.

Windows uses the respectively selected variant Hybrid or completely shut down if the hiberfil.sys is deactivated.

Windows 8.1 in the modern UI Metro style

- Use the mouse to the right top Charms Bar opens. Then press the Settings button to select On / Off
- Simply press Win + C Settings then down on / off
- Even easier Win + i press On / Off

Fully shut down Windows 8.1

- As described above, only hold down the shift key (arrow up) when you click on Shutdown.
- Or with a shortcut% windir% \ system32 \ shutdown.exe / s / t 0

Start Windows 8.1 in Safe Mode

- As described above, only hold down the Shift key (arrow up) when you click on Restart.
- Further possibilities to enter the safe mode: Start safe mode

Use the shortcut Win + X Shut Down, Restart

New in Windows 8.1 is the possibility to switch off the PC via the administrative menu Win + X or to put it to sleep.

- Win + X
- Open the Shut Down menu at the bottom
- Here you can choose between Shut Down, Restart.

So it's enough

- Win + x / r / r one after the other to shut down
- Win + x / r / n to restart.
- Win + x / r / e for energy saving

Important: Shutting down via Win + X means complete shutdown, despite the fast start (hybrid mode) enabled.

[Update]: With the Windows update in April 2014, Windows 8.1 can also be shut down via Win + X in hybrid mode, so fast. Here, too, you can shut down the PC completely by holding down the Shift key (up arrow). This saves the manual addition of the shortcuts with the Win + X Menu Editor as necessary under Windows 8.

Create shortcuts for shutdown, restart, safe mode

Right click e.g. On the desktop> New> Add shortcut and path:
- Complete shutdown:% windir% \ system32 \ shutdown.exe / s / t 0
- Shut down in hybrid mode: (hiberfil.sys)% windir% \ system32 \ shutdown.exe / s / hybrid / t 0
- See Also Difference Quiesced, Suspend to RAM, Hybrid Shut Down - Windows 8 Windows 8.1
- Restart:% windir% \ system32 \ shutdown.exe / r / t 0
- Advanced startup options:% windir% \ system32 \ shutdown.exe / o / r / t 0
- See also other options: Start Advanced Startup Options - Windows 8 Windows 8.1

- Log off:% windir% \ system32 \ shutdown.exe -L
- Sleep: C: \ Windows \ System32 \ rundll32.exe powrprof.dll, SetSuspendState Sleep

Other ways to shut down

All other possibilities as well as scripts, tools or tiles for shutting down, logging off, restarting can be found in the manual of Windows 8, which can also be used.

Add rest state to the menu

In order to integrate the rest state into the menus, one has to:
- Press Win + R
- Powercfg.cpl and start
- In the new window, select What to do when you press the power button
- On top of Some settings are currently unavailable
- Now down hook pure at Ruzustand

That was it. The idle state also appears in the menu.

Important: If the idle state is in the menu, the key combination in the Win + X menu changes:

- Win + X / r / r = Resting state
- Win + X / r / r / r = Shut down
